Unless you have been living under a rock for the past decade, you have seen the clinical studies surrounding concussions and contact sports. Currently there are roughly 20 million children engaged in sports programs nationwide and studies of Chronic Trauma Encephalopathy (CTE) are continually linking the illness with contact sports. In a study released in 2017, “Autopsies of the brains found signs of CTE in 177, or 87 percent of all the football players in the study. Specifically, it was found in 29 percent of high school players, 87 percent of college players, 71 percent of semi-pro players, 88 percent of Canadian Football League players and 99 percent of National Football League players” (https://medicalxpress.com/news/2019-02-brain-condition-cte-hs-football.html). This disease has only recently come to light after increased awareness of premature death and abnormal cognitive ability in NFL players. When looking at CTE in 110 of 111 donated brains of deceased NFL players, it provides a valid condition of a potentially fatal side effect of playing professional football. Since the studies have been released, the NFL has donated millions of dollars to help researchers understand the disease and work towards a way to study and reverse the condition in living patients.
